Disposal & Recycling
Waste has
become an increasingly difficult environmental and economic problem, one which
affects us all and to which we all contribute. Therefore, we all have a vital
role to play in schemes to reduce waste and increase recycling.
Already there
are many companies that can collect your waste paper, collect your old office
furniture, companies that will leave you a skip to be filled with general
rubbish and there are companies that will collect your unwanted computer
hardware and dispose of it. Not only will ROC Recycling do all of this for you,
we will also guarantee it will be recycled.
One company to call, one person to deal
with. More and more,
the production of waste at work is seen as a form of inefficiency and a misuse
of resources, which can have economic and environmental implications for
individual companies and the country as a whole.
The perception
of recycling is seen as being ‘green’, but the main reason for doing it is to
save energy, resources and reduce landfill. For example, recycling 100kg of
waste paper saves almost 11,000 litres of water used to produce 100kg of new
paper. Or, it takes as much energy to produce one new aluminium can as it does
to make twenty from recycled aluminium. These facts make it easier to
understand why surveys suggest that waste typically costs companies 4.5% of
their turnover.
In the UK we produce
approximately 420 million tonnes of solid waste every year. As a nation we
recycle only 11% of it. Compared to other countries in Western
Europe we are one of the worst recyclers. Switzerland achieves 52%, Austria 50%, Germany
48% and the Netherlands
46%. Working with one recycling company has to be the most efficient way.

Why shred confidential waste Under the Data
Protection Act, companies are responsible for the security of personal information.
In October 1998 the revised, amended and strengthened Data Protection Bill
became law - and it goes much further than the 1984 Act. The new Act covers not
only personal data held on computers but also data recorded and held in manual
filing systems. Personal data means any information relating to an identified
person. Any information gathered with the intention of being put into any
retrievable system is subject to the Act, even before it is put into the
system.
For
responsible companies it is vital that when data is finished with, it is
destroyed in a safe and secure manner
The Data
Protection Registrar’s guidelines are quite specific:
“Personal data
held for any purpose or purposes shall not be kept for longer than is
necessary... it will be appropriate to dispose of documents by shredding...”
Any personal
details that become public could lead to the offending company being prosecuted
for breaching its legal liability. Lockable confidential paper bins, available
in various designs, are located around your offices for safe disposal of
confidential information. These are collected at specified intervals and taken
to a secure environment for safe disposal. Immediately after destruction an
audited Certificate of Destruction is issued to you for your records (see
example). This is to guarantee that each consignment has been safely and
securely destroyed. Wood, Metal, Plastics and Glass Recycling
What will happen to my waste?
Roc operatives
will sort and breakdown at our premises items that can be recycled. For
example, the separation of metal legs from a wooden desktop, or, the plastic
surround from a glass panel divider. These will then be placed in individual
holding receptacles for onward transportation to the appropriate recycling facility.
Waste
Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)
Approximately
170,000 tonnes of WEEE is produced in the London
area every year. Unwanted computers and CRT monitors can no longer be disposed
of indiscriminately and must be disposed of in a way that is environmentally
and ecologically friendly. ROC will collect WEEE products, have them stripped
down to component parts and recycled. We understand the absolute need for
client confidentiality and any computer hard drives can be destroyed with Certificates
of destruction produced as proof.
